Every woman knows: the week of your period is an uncomfortable one to say the least. Your hormones are screwing with your emotions, and you’re probably not feeling so great. We agree – but the thing is, sometimes eating junk foods during your period can worsen symptoms.  Instead of throwing out the healthy-eating rulebook the week of your period, here are some foods you can eat that might actually help alleviate your symptoms. If you load up on these, the week will go quickly and painlessly!

Fiber

It is important that you stock up on leafy greens and fruits during your period. Greens like lettuce and kale and all fruits are high in iron, vitamin B and fiber, all of which can help to combat digestive problems and discomfort that’s often associated with your menstrual cycle. Whole grains are also full of fiber, and will keep you feeling regular. If you’re going to indulge in carbs, indulge in whole grain options.

Good Fat

Instead of bingeing on brownies and cookies, eat as much healthy fat as you can! Nuts are full of good fats, also known as omega-3s. Nuts will keep you feeling full and satisfied, and curb those period-week cravings for sugar and sweets.

Iron

You lose a lot of iron during your period and eating lean red meats can help your body replace the iron it needs. If you ever feel lightheaded or dizzy during your period, it could be because your iron levels are low. You don’t want to overdo it with red meat, but adding it into your diet one or two times a week during your period can help you feel stronger.

Antioxidants

If you do need just a taste of something sweet, indulge in dark chocolate. It’ll kill your sugar craving and it’s high in antioxidants. Plus, dark chocolates boost serotonin in your brain, which can help you combat mood swings associated with your cycle.

We know that getting through the week of your period sometimes feels like an uphill battle; we all fight that battle once a month. If you stay hydrated and eat good-for-you foods, you can help your body to feel as normal as possible.
