Importance of Educating Young Females on Periods

Being a preteen or teenage girl is confusing enough, let alone adding on top of that starting your period. This change may come to a shock for young females due to lack of menstruation awareness, which is why it’s critical to educate females early for what’s to come.

In fact, a recent Betty for Schools survey found that 44 percent of girls “do not know what is happening to them the first time they have their period.”

That number is staggering and illustrates the need for such early education.

The research found that 58 percent of girls surveyed felt embarrassed when they had their first period while 60 percent of girls indicated they felt scared.

Periods are a natural part of womanhood and should be approached as such.

Young females should be taught what menstruating actually is before it happens to help ease the transition into budding womanhood and teach them that periods are nothing to be ashamed of.

Without this vital education for young females, you risk them not understanding when their period actually comes. How you approach these discussions will help them understand their bodies and this natural part of being a female.

Bringing up this conversation can be understandably awkward or intimidating, but don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Here are some tips on how to broach the topic to the young female in your life.

How to Talk About It

  • Be mindful of your tone when bringing up the topic. It’s important to be open and honest when it comes to educating your loved ones about periods, setting the tone that this is nothing to be ashamed of.
  • Have the talk in your style. If you’re not a sit down-type of person, you can keep it informal. Try to keep it casual and conversational.
  • Don’t forget to include period products in the talk, informing her of how to use them and letting her know where they will be located when the time comes.
  • Take a proactive versus a reactive approach with period education. Remember those stats? Don’t wait until after she has her first period. Instead make sure to have the talk prior to that time. That way she will be informed when the time comes, helping to make what may seem scary to some a little easier.
