How Your Period Changes As You Age

As we age, our period often ages with us. We change as we start to get older and our period changes along with us. Until we reach the point of menopause and our period stops all together, our periods are changing. It is important to be aware of what changes you might experience and what might cause them.

Many people in their twenties begin to experiment with a variety of birth controls. Some people sample different pills and some people choose to try IUD’s. Birth control can change how your period feels and how your period functions. It is important to find the right birth control for you and you should consult with a doctor about what might work best for you.  Our twenties are also filled with a tremendous amount of stress. Stress is certainly a constant in our lives regardless of our age, but we deal with a lot life changing events in our twenties. We deal with our first serious relationship, our first “real world” job, our first major purchase such as a house or an apartment, and much more. Stress can affect your period. If you experience a tremendous amount of stress, it may result in your period being irregular and you need to be aware that stress could be a factor.

Unfortunately, women in their thirties start to face more health conditions that may affect their period. Women in their thirties often face fibroids, polyps, and benign uterine growths. Although women can face these health conditions at any point, they are especially common in your thirties. The good news is that all of these can be treated; the bad news is that they can make your period feel heavy and painful. Many women in their thirties also suffer with thyroid issues. Thyroid problems and period issues are directly linked. Severe thyroid issues can prolong menstruation and worsen cramps. Many women also start having children in their thirties which really affects your cycle. After you have a baby, it will take some time for your body to regulate itself back to a normal cycle.

Many women start to experience indications of menopause when they are in their forties, although they might not reach menopause until their fifties or sixties. Periods will often fluctuate in your forties and your period will often come and go without warning. Some women in their forties miss their periods frequently but have a long cycle when it does arrive.  Although women should be considering illness as a factor regardless of age women in there are more prone to uterine cancer. It is rare but it can happen. If you start to experience really severe periods and you normally don’t have them, make sure you talk to your doctor.

Regardless of what age you are, you should be well-aware of your period. You need to understand how your period functions so you can notice if it is irregular.  You should be visiting a gynecologist that you feel comfortable with on a regular basis.
